What is edible landscaping? Edible Landscaping is a term applied to decorative landscaping that contains food bearing plants. The idea of combining fruit, herb and vegetable producing plants together with ornamental plants in a decorative landscape is not a new one. Historical examples of edible landscaping exist within the gardens of ancient Roman villas, medieval monasteries and Spanish missions to name just a few examples. The appeal of this type of garden lies in part because it benefits the garden owner (and the garden owners closest friends), with fresher, tastier, organically grown produce. Beyond that, gardens designed and built upon ecological principals connect the garden lover with the larger world beyond the garden walls. Such gardens offer opportunity for neighborhood community, shelter and feed birds and butterflies and remove carbon dioxide and release oxygen from the air. Such gardens offer us a stronger connection to the earth.
